When it comes to kitchens they can be the make or break of a fabulous home. Revamping your kitchen doesn’t have to be a hassle. In the long run it can help reduce stress from your life and enhance your homes natural beauty. With kitchen design there are some essential points to consider that can make that real difference to your home.

Choose the right cabinets

With cabinets, size is everything. If you can afford the room then bigger really is better. If you have high ceilings then choose tall cabinets that go to the ceiling. They look great by unbalancing the lines that can make a kitchen look harsh and can give a grand visual aspect to the room. They also allow vital space on other walls for hangings or electrical appliances.
Another important aspect is the style of the cabinet. Do you choose paint or stained wood, or perhaps even glass. Why not go for all three. There are no rules stating cabinets must all be the same. For instance use light wood stain on some fronts and dark on others. Or paint all the top draws brown and have the rest white. Use a glass cabinet as a feature to show off your best china.

The countertop

Select a stylish but appropriate countertop, one that works with the theme of your room. You can raise or lower the height of the counter in certain areas, particularly around an island or a cooker top. Just adding or lowering height by 4 to 6 inches can really make a difference to the look of the kitchen. Ensure ample work surfaces so as not to allow the design to look cluttered or too busy.

Finally don’t overstate the features. Feel free to go bold with colour on walls, but decorative plinths or plaster shapes on cabinet fronts can epitomize ugliness and overkill. Remember the flair of your kitchen should be in good taste with the rest of your house.

Kitchen Worktops

Making the right choice of worktop can be difficult when there are so many materials to choose from:

  • Granite
  • Natural Stone
  • Composite
  • Wood
  • Stainless Steel

Different kitchen worktops will obviously have their advantages and disadvantages.

Granite and natural stone worktops generally look stunning and are very durable and resistant to heat. They are however quite a lot more pricey than other alternatives. Laminates and composites are much cheaper than natural stone surfaces and can come in a variety of styles and colours, making them quite versatile. They are however less durable and heat resistant.

Whatever your taste and budget, you are bound to find a worktop that suits.

Kitchen flooring types

The type of flooring you chose for your kitchen is just as impopratnt as choosing the cabinets as it will help complment your new kitchen. You will also need a flooring type that is both hardwearing and easy to keep clean.

Tiles have been a popular choice of flooring in kitchens for years, as is good as it is a hard material that is water resistant. Tiles make it very easy to keep things clean when mess is made; a quick push around with a mop and they will be sparkling again. Tiles can be finished and glazed in order to make them slip reistant and more durable.
One drawback of tiles is that they cna feel quite cold underfoot, but when combined with undertile heating can be pleasant to walk on in, even in the coldest months of the year.

Laminate flooring is a good, quick and relitively cheap way of flooring your kitchen. It is water resistant, easy to maintain and anti-static. Laminate flooring is very simple to fit, the glue which is used is easy to apply and quick drying. So it causes minimal disruption as you can be back in your kitchen in no time at all.

Bamboo is good as it is resistance to moisture and it is much stronger than most other common woods which are used in the kitchen area. It has increased in popularity over recent years.
